Ask a creative

In this, I talk about Raine in the Underlands and how the story came together, from building the world to shaping Raine as a character. I share a bit about my writing process, what inspires my work, and what I love about writing middle-grade fantasy. It’s a relaxed behind-the-scenes look at the book and the creative choices behind it, with a few thoughts for writers along the way.

I talk about why middle-grade stories are so magical — not just because of adventure or fantasy, but because they sit right in the middle of big change. Middle grade lets me explore fear, bravery, uncertainty, and growing up in a way that feels safe and exciting for young readers. Magic becomes a way to reflect real emotions and help kids make sense of the world, while still giving them stories full of wonder, hope, and heart.

In this interview, I talk about diving into middle-grade fantasy with Raine in the Underlands: The Lorekeepers and why I wanted the story to balance magic and adventure with very real kid emotions. I share how my background in teaching and short fiction shaped the book, and how much I love letting characters lead the story rather than rigidly plotting. There’s also a peek into my love of dragons, mythological creatures, and the joy of seeing the world come to life through the cover art.

In the Book Chat I shared how I’ve always loved reading and making up stories, and how that led me through teaching and editing to writing Raine in the Underlands. I talked about why fantasy lets me explore big feelings in a fun way, how I wrote the book in lots of little bursts over the years, and how I build my world and magic by keeping detailed notes. I also mentioned how my background in English helps with themes and structure, and that I’m nearly finished with the second book and juggling a few other projects.
